The Problem
The story of the Fram
Fridtjof Nansen's ambition was to explore the Arctic farther north than anyone else. The mission was a challenge as there was not yet a ship strong enough that would withstand the freezing ice.
The Solution
The building of the Fram ship
The polar ship Fram (meaning “forward” in Norwegian) was designed and built by Colin Archer for Fridtjof Nansen's drift across the Arctic Ocean in 1893–96. The ship was built to survive the pressure, not by pure strength, but because of the design that let the ice push the ship up, so it would "float" on top of it.
The Result
The achievements of the Fram
Fram still holds the records for sailing farthest north and farthest south. The ship proves that a smart design can overcome any obstacle and sometimes it is more powerful than strength.
